⚖️ Wellness Wednesday: Why Balance Gets Worse With Age – And What We Can Do About It
Remember when you were younger and could stand on one leg, jump around or move without giving your balance a second thought?
As we get older, something many of us take for granted can gradually start to decline… our balance.
But why does this happen?
Balance relies on a combination of muscle strength, vision, our inner ear and our body’s ability to sense where it is in space.
As we age, these systems can become less effective, making us feel less steady on our feet and increasing the risk of falls.
The good news? Balance is something we can train and improve at almost any age!
Here’s how:
💪 Build leg strength – Exercises like squats, lunges and step-ups help strengthen the muscles that keep us stable.
⚖️ Practise standing on one leg – A simple but effective way to challenge your balance. Start near a sturdy support.
🚶 Keep moving – Walking, dancing and other regular activities help maintain coordination and confidence.
🧘 Challenge your stability – Activities like Tai Chi and controlled balance exercises can improve body awareness.
🏋️ Include resistance training – Stronger muscles help us react and recover when we lose our balance.
And here’s something important: you don’t have to wait until you’re older to start.
Maintaining good balance is just as valuable in your 30s and 40s as it is in your 60s, 70s and beyond.
✨ Ageing is inevitable, but losing your balance doesn’t have to be.
👉 This week, try standing on one leg for 20–30 seconds while keeping a sturdy support nearby. You might be surprised how challenging it feels!
Train your balance today to help protect your independence tomorrow. 💚💪
